A new family moved in next door.
Bea watched from behind the fence. There was a little duck about her size.
The duck looked at Bea. Bea looked at the duck.
Neither of them said anything.
The next morning, Bea put a daisy through the fence. Just one small daisy.
The duck picked it up and sniffed it.
Then the duck put a pebble back through the fence. A smooth, shiny pebble.
Bea held it in her hand. It was perfect.
That afternoon, they played on either side of the fence — and it felt like playing together.
The next day, Bea said hello.
And the duck said hello back.
