Lena and her best friend Bea had a big argument.

Lena said something unkind. She knew it was unkind even as she said it. But she said it anyway.

Bea went home.

Lena felt terrible. She tried to read. She tried to play. Everything felt heavy.

The next morning, Lena knocked on Bea's door.

Bea opened it. She looked sad.

"I'm sorry," said Lena. "I said something mean and I didn't mean it. I was just cross. But that's not an excuse."

Bea was quiet for a moment.

"I know you didn't mean it," she said.

"I'm going to try not to say things like that even when I'm cross," said Lena.

Bea nodded. "That's all I wanted."

They stood there for a moment. Then Bea held the door open wider.

"Do you want to come in?"

Lena stepped inside. The heavy feeling lifted away.
