There was a new girl in class. Her name was Priya, and she sat at the back and didn't talk to anyone.
Oscar knew how that felt. He had been new once.
He remembered eating his lunch alone. He remembered not knowing where anything was. He remembered pretending to be very interested in his shoelaces so no one would notice he had no one to talk to.
At lunch, Oscar picked up his tray and walked to Priya's table.
"Can I sit here?" he asked.
Priya looked up, surprised.
"Okay," she said quietly.
They ate in silence for a bit.
Then Oscar said, "Do you like football?"
"I prefer drawing," said Priya.
"I'm terrible at drawing," said Oscar. "Will you teach me?"
She smiled for the first time. "Okay," she said.
By the end of lunch, they had plans for after school. It turned out to be that easy.
